According to his Father, Mang Ernesto, a certain Ka Garry of the New People's Army in Vinzons is recruiting his son. Ka Garry was reported to be a UP student who recruits students to join the NPA in Camarines Norte.

On June 7, 1982, Mang Ernesto got the fright of his life when Ka Garry was reported killed in a raid conducted by members of the 60th IB of the Philippine Constabulary on a copra-drying storage place in Brgy. 3, Vinzons, Camarines Norte. Mang Ernesto saw the dead body of Ka Garry in the police station of Vinzons.

He also learned that three of Ka Garry's comrades were able to escape. At noontime, Mang Ernesto's worry eased when Arnulfo went home with two other companions. He cooked them food for lunch after he saw them very tired and hungry. In the afternoon, Arnulfo, together with his friends, left. Mang Ernesto thought his son was still going to school and that he was assured that nothing would happen to him. But at that time, he had doubts about Arnulfo's activities.

Five months later, in November 1982, Arnulfo came home but left soon after, telling his father that they were very busy in the school. Mang Ernesto's fear came again; this time it's serious. Footprints of military combat shoes were seen on their backyards. According to Mang Arnesto, it seems that they (military) were conducting surveillance on Arnulfo.

Sometime in 1983, members of the Philippine Constabulary forcibly took Mang Ernesto out of his residence. He was brought to a cemetery and asked where he had buried his guns. Every time he denied owning such, he received blows and kicks on his body. The PC soldiers pointed their M16 rifles at him. One soldier got a single bullet and placed it in a .38 caliber pistol, rolled its revolver, and pointed its barrel at his right temple. Another soldier kept asking him of Arnulfo's whereabouts. But he never gave up, and the soldiers let him go.

On the eve of Vinzons' town fiesta, June 28, 1983, Mang Ernesto talked to his son. It was their last; since then, Arnulfo did not return home.
