On April 17, 2006, at around 9:30 to 10:30 am, a shooting rampage, robbery, and torture were initiated by 22 fully armed men who introduced themselves as alleged members of the RHB rebels (Rebolusyunaryong Hukbong Bayan), whom residents identified as one of the 56th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army inside the Metalore Mining Area in Camachin, Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan. Bernabe Mediola, at the time of the incident, was working along with his fellow miners and was handing out their company wages for the miners when they heard a burst of gunfire in a different direction, and an hour later, heavily armed men in full battle gear (believed to be members of the 56th IB, PA) started rounding up others along with Bernabe Mendiola, who was pointed out by an army agent as Ka Ado. The perpetrators also took the miners' personal belongings such as a wristwatch, wallet, cell phone, CD stereo, shoes, and a huge amount of money (for the miners' wages). Bernabe Mendiola was tortured and manhandled by his captors along with 18 others who were blindfolded, had their hands tied behind their backs, were forced to lie face down, and were threatened with harm if they attempted to get up or saw their faces. Bernabe Mensiola, along with others, was later separated and forced to board the Metalore mining truck, which sped towards an unknown destination. Witnesses on the case saw the four were in great pain upon fleeing the area. According to ALMMA reports, a minute later (5 minutes), troops (26 members) belonging to the 56th IB of the Philippine Army under the command of 2nd Lt. Ferdinand Basas appeared from the same direction in which the alleged RHB rebels escaped along with their 4 victims without having encountered the alleged rebel groups, in the same route where a military checkpoint was stationed in Sitio Dayap and an army detachment in the center of Brgy. Camachin. One of the military (in military uniform) has said, "Buti na lamang at hindi kami napang-abot at ang RHB dahil kung nagpang-abot kami, pati kayo patay." The military continues to watch over the terrified residents and miners in Sitio Bakalan until the next day, April 18, 2006. At around 2:00 to 3:00 pm the military ordered the remaining 15 persons to board a Metalore service truck and brought them to listen to their oration. The military ordered them to kill all the NPA rebels who were entering their barangays.
