Jimmy Malicdem, 34 years old, married, a council member of an urban poor organization (Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralitang Lunsod), and an alleged ranking member of the New People's Army operating in Metro Manila, was arrested by policemen in civilian clothes along Ninoy Aquino Avenue in Parañaque on October 8, 1987.

According to Edwin Macalinao, a pedicab driver who saw the incident, Jimmy Malicdem and his companion Jun Aragon were arrested by nine armed men along Ninoy Aquino Avenue in Parañaque at around 11:00 in the evening after the two, along with four other companions, left a beerhouse and rode a pedicab. The armed men forcibly took Jimmy inside the pedicab and dragged him inside a car and sped off towards Paranaque proper. His companion Jun Aragon was likewise arrested by the other armed men and dragged inside into another car.

Another companion, Rolando Reyes, immediately reported the incident to the Paranaque Police Substation 2.

According to Jimmy's wife, Erlinda, his husband was a known urban poor leader in their area. As a matter of fact, he was the president of a local urban poor organization in their barangay. He was also chosen as representative of the National Housing Authority in its Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Committee in Paranaque.

The community Jimmy used to reside in was a suspected lair of communist hit squad members. Because of Jimmy's involvement in the cause of the urban poor people in the community, he was branded by some local officials and policemen as a member of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Hence, he was arrested.  Since his abduction, Jimmy Malicdem has remained missing despite the long search efforts conducted by his family, relatives, and friends.
